My subject matter is broad but often focuses on trying to capture a response to the transitory – shadows on walls, moving figures, changing landscapes, brief visits to vastly different cultures…..I like to work in sketchbooks using mainly ink and watercolour, sometimes incorporating found papers. Travel is a continuing source of inspiration, particularly visits to Nepal and India. A current pre-occupation is in maintaining the curiosity and mindset of the traveller closer to home. For the last year I have been absorbed in sketching my home town of Kendal.
I like to develop my sketches both in watercolour, which I taught for many years, and in mixed media. My interest in watercolour is in trying to capture light and dark and to build depth while still maintaining the wonderful transparency of the medium. The mixed media pieces concentrate on developing line drawings by working on prepared surfaces using my own hand-made and found papers. The work is constantly developing in response to new inspiration and continued experimentation with a current emphasis on working more on location and less in the studio.
